Primary schools in and near Kinvara are being encouraged to participate in this year’s local Christmas Market’s Children’s Art Competition.
There are two categories in the competition: Junior Infants to Second Class, and Third Class to Sixth Class.
Minister Ciaran Cannon has urged schools to get involved, and commended the initiative on promoting environmental awareness and encouraging support of locally-made crafts in South Galway.
The Galway East TD said: “I note that the Collins Dictionary has chosen ‘single-use’ as its` Word of the Year for 2018, which indicates the growing awareness of the impact that single-use products have on the environment.
“In addition, my colleague Minister Bruton recently spoke about the need for Ireland to become a leader in in responding to climate change, not a follower.
“I am delighted, therefore, to see the initiative undertaken by Kinvara Christmas Market in promoting a Children`s Art Competition with the theme of ‘Plastic-Free Christmas’ and which encourages the purchase of local, hand-made gifts which are free of excess packaging and environmentally friendly.”
Artworks will be collected from schools on 3Â December 2018 and displayed in Kinvara Community Hall, with winners’ parents notified in advance.
