Plans for long awaited upgrades to the pier on Inis Oirr have been given a positive progress update, as Minister Heather Humphreys has given it the go ahead.
Minister announced that she has approved the business case for the project, the cost/benefit justification, and that Galway County Council can now proceed to tender.
Galway Senator Sean Kyne said that this announcement is “great news for the people of Inis Oirr” and that he was delighted with the announcement.
“The pier project is absolutely vital for the future of their island and the safety of harbour users.”
The pier upgrade is meant to tackle safety issues at the pier related to waves breaking over it, and is considered essential for both locals, and for the safety of tourists arriving by ferry.
Other issues related to ferries arriving at the island are also expected to be a part of the upgrade project.
