Holocaust survivor Tomi Reichental visited Galway yesterday to speak to students in Portumna Community School.
Mr Reichental recently published a new book for children aged 10 and over, to give young readers an understanding of life at the time of the Holocaust.
Minister Ciaran Cannon said that he was pleased to learn that that students and staff from Portumna Community School had the opportunity to meet with the Holocaust survivor and to listen to his story.
The Fine Gael TD explained: “Mr Reichental lost 35 family members in the Holocaust and is himself a survivor.
“He has devoted great time to visiting schools and colleges throughout Europe telling his story and warning of the dangers of racism.
“I am also interested to note that Mr Reichental has recently published a new book for children aged 10 and over, entitled “Tomi” to give young readers an understanding of life at the time of the Holocaust.
“I wish to commend all associated with arranging Mr Reichental`s visit to Portumna Community School which was a great honour for students.”
‘A review into the optional nature of History under the new Framework for Junior Cycle was recently announced and this event in Portumna not only brought history alive for students but also gave them hugely valuable perspectives’.
