Galway Daily news GMIT creates new scholarship partnerships with GAA associations

The Gaelic Players Association and the Women’s Gaelic Players Association have partnered with GMIT on a new scholarship programme.

The scholarship programme is jointly funded by GMIT and the two associations and provides members with financial support for four taught Masters programmes as well as research programmes from any faculty.

The research masters covered under the scholarship programme will focus on areas such as recovery, sleep quality and nutrition, with the goal of advancing the welfare needs of inter county players.

Paul Flynn, CEO at the GPA said, “We are delighted to welcome GMIT to our postgraduate scholarship programme.

He added that it would allow members of the two associations to “further enhance their career prospects through participation in highly sought-after graduate programmes”.

“Maintaining their sporting pursuits while giving them the option to study closer to home, thus alleviating some of the pressures of travel.”

This new programme at GMIT is the latest in a number of partnerships the GPA and WGPA have forged with higher education institute’s.

Maria Kinsella, Chair of WGPA, said that they are passionate about supporting players “on and off the field of play.”

“These new scholarship opportunities are most welcome and we are proud to be partnered with the team at GMIT.”

Dr Des Foley, Acting Vice President of Academic Affairs and GMIT Registrar said the new scholarship programme is an important resource as the Institute of Technology expands its portfolio of postgraduate courses.

We are also developing a new Sports Strategy and it is very important to us to cultivate relationships with sporting organisations regionally and nationally.
