Gardaí have formally identified missing Galway man Stephen Cunningham after remains found earlier this month have been identified.
The search for the 32 year old man has been formally stood down today following confirmation of his identity by forensic analysis.
Stephen went missing from his home in Ballybrit last November, and intensive searches in the weeks and months after came to focus on the Maam Cross area.
His body was recovered in the Maam Cross area on Saturday, April 9.
The discovery of clothes and shoes in the area not long before had brought new intensity to the searches.
A Garda spokesperson said today “Following the discovery of human remains in the Maam Cross area of County Galway on Saturday, 9th April 2022 and subsequent DNA analysis by Forensic Science Ireland, the missing person appeal for Stephen Cunningham has been stood down.”
Gardaí thanked the public for their assistance in the searches.
