A Galway woman was the sole survivor of a car accident in Co Donegal last night which tragically killed her husband and two children.

Geraldine Mullan (nee Connaughton) from Williamstown was travelling in the car with her family when it went off the road into Lough Foyle at around 10pm yesterday.

Her husband John was trapped in the black Mitsubishi and her children Tomás (14) and Amelia (6) were unable to get to safety after escaping the car, Donegal Daily reported today.

Ms Mullan managed to escape and was rescued before being rushed to Letterkenny University Hospital.

The funerals will take place on Monday, 24 August at 11am.

Donegal TD Pádraig MacLochlainn said that the news was devastating.

“The people of Inishowen have suffered from road tragedies more than most and I know that we will do all we can to support this poor family.

“My deepest and heartfelt sympathy to the family and all their friends,” he said.
