Galway County saw the lowest temperatures in Ireland over the weekend, as cold weather brought ongoing freezing conditions.

For the past two days, the Athenry weather station has recorded temperatures plummeting to -8 degrees overnight and into the morning on Saturday and Sunday.

This is lower than was recorded by any other monitoring station in Ireland.

A Status Yellow warning for low temperatures and ice will remain in effect throughout the country until Friday afternoon.

There will be widespread severe frosts and icy stretches Met Eireann has said, with some showers of hail and sleet in coastal areas.

Galway is also under a Status Orange warning for freezing fog until midnight, which will create hazardous driving conditions.
