The Galway Market at St. Nicholas Church was forced to close early today due to social distancing issues, after reopening for the first time in weeks.

Today market the first day of the reopening of the weekend Galway Market since Ireland began easing restrictions imposed for the Covid-19 pandemic.

The city council had said that it would be monitoring the situation this weekend, and ultimately shut the market on advice from the Gardaí today.

“Galway City Council regret that due to lack of social distancing and following the advice of the Gardaí, St Nicholas’s market has been closed early today.”

The “safe operation” of the market will be reviewed in the coming days a statement from the city council said.

It is still planned for it to resume tomorrow, for food traders only, but this will be subject to compliance with social distancing.
