Galway Daily news Galway Hooker offering internships for microbrewers with U.S. university

Galway Hooker is helping to show aspiring microbrewers the ropes through internships run in partnership with a craft beverages course at Lourdes University in Ohio, Unites States.

The 4-year Bachelor of Science in Craft Beverages gives would be vinters and microbrewers the chance to master the art, science, and business of making wine, brewing beer, and distilling spirits.

Students in the course will take three internships over the four years, one of which will be in Ireland.

Lourdes’ partners in Ireland are Galway Hooker based out in Oranmore, and Nephin whiskey distillery in Mayo.

The other two internships will take place in the U.S. at Inside the Five, Black Cloister, Twin Oast, or Upside breweries, select vineyeards in California, and Heidelberg Distributing .

Lourdes University President Dr Mary Ann Gawelek said of the course: “Our administration and excellent faculty strive to be a University that is innovative by choice.”

“To meet the needs of students and employers, we continue to build and expand our partnerships in the for-profit and non-profit sectors.”

Last month Galway Hooker’s Irish Pale Ale and Amber Lager both won gold medal at the World Beer Awards 2018, showing that Ireland has really started to take its place in craft brewing alongside countries that have a longer history of creating world famous beers.
