The care provided by, and the overall ethos of, the Galway Hospice Foundation has led to a family history research society in the county raising €20,000 for it over 20 years.

Woodford-based East Galway Family History Society will host its annual Bewley’s Big Coffee Morning for Hospice at the local Heritage Centre.

The longstanding and much-loved national event, coordinated by Together for Hospice, takes place across the country on 26th September, and the local event at the Heritage Centre will take place from 9.30am to 4.00pm.

“We all know someone who has fought a battle with cancer, many of us may yet go through it, and we know the money raised is very well spent,” said Society Manager, Monica Hynes.

The Society is a voluntary, not-for-profit family history research organisation based at the Woodford Heritage Centre and has for over 30 years welcomed national and international visitors tracing their ancestors.

It offers family history reports and research services at the centre, or alternatively, its historical records are searchable for a subscription at www.rootsireland.ie.

It also facilitates community education and training courses.

“We hosted our first Hospice coffee event 20 years ago, and have built enormous buy-in from surrounding parishes, businesses and schools with the help of brilliant local bakers,” adds Monica.

“As a not-for-profit with a voluntary board, our choice of charity was based on a number of critical factors, including the fact Galway Hospice is run by a voluntary, unpaid board with high standards of governance.

“We also support the Hospice by selling its fundraising merchandise, including calendars and Christmas cards.

“Many of us are familiar with the wonderful work of the Galway Hospice and the care, support and attention patients receive.

“It brings a lot of comfort to patients and their families – that is why our event is so well supported.”

Together for Hospice, The National Hospice Movement, represents 24 Hospice and specialist palliative homecare providers supporting patients and their families across Ireland.

Funds raised locally stay local and go directly to each local Hospice service to innovate, build new facilities, develop new services and deliver quality improvements and extra benefits for their patients and their family members.
