An energy conservation campaign is underway in Galway, with the City Council aiming to reduce its overall energy use in City Hall during winter.
The Reduce your Use campaign aims to use simple internal messaging to encourage staff to turn off lights and monitors when not in the office, to close doors, turn down the internal heating system to 19 degrees, and reduce energy waste in general.
Delivered by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and the Office of Public Works (OPW), the energy efficiency initiative provides a structured programme of energy saving activities that public bodies can undertake during the winter months.Â
Supporting the campaign, Mayor of the City of Galway, Cllr Eddie Hoare said that analysis from the OPW shows that the initiative works, with an average of 20% energy savings in a sample of 29 buildings where the campaign was implemented in 2022/23.
“Some buildings achieved over 50% savings. This campaign is very timely as it reduces overall energy costs while at the same time lowering our Green House Gas emissions. I hope other organisations in the city will be able to initiate a similar campaign,” he said.
An energy efficiency assessment has been carried out by Aramark, and the Galway City Council Facilities and Climate Action departments are leading the project.
