Funding of more than €350,000 has been awarded for the conservation and repair of heritage buildings in Galway City and County.
Galway City Council has been awarded €91,882 under this year’s Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS), while the County Council will receive €260,654.
The BHIS assists the owners of heritage structures with their obligations to care for their properties by providing match-funded grants of up to €15,000.
The scheme is not just limited to privately owned buildings, but to a wide range of heritage structures, such as the old Fisheries WatchTower on Wolfe Tone Bridge in this year’s allocations.
Also included under this year’s scheme is funding of €500,000 for conservation repairs to eligible historic thatched structures.
Galway County Council was one of the biggest applicants under this stream of the BHIS, receiving €115,000 for 11 thatched structures.
A total of €4.5 million was allocated for conservation works at 556 historical buildings in Ireland this year.
Minister of State for Heritage Malcolm Noonan said that he was pleased to announce this “significant investment” in Ireland’s built heritage.
He added that this funding “Will allow so many owners and custodians of historic and protected structures across the country to complete necessary works to maintain these structures and safeguard them for the benefit of future generations.”
