A wide variety of agricultural shows across Galway will benefit from a new €600,000 fund from the Department of Rural and Community Development.

Galway East TD Seán Canney said that €5,000 each is being awarded to agricultural shows in Ardrahan, Athenry, Corrandulla, Gort, Glenamaddy, Ballinasloe and Claregalway.

Other county agricultural shows approved include Galway, Ballyconneely Performance Show, Ballyconneely Agri Show, Carraroe, Clifden Connemara Pony Show, Connemara Charity Show and Cashel.

These events are “important landmarks for the farming community and attract a huge amount of interest among local people and tourists, providing a welcome boost for local economies,” Seán Canney said.

“They are great events with many of them offering a whole range of additional activities, including cookery, crafts, demonstrations and competitions.”

“I particularly want to acknowledge the efforts of all the volunteers who do so much during the year to make these shows happen.”

Approximately 120 shows nationally will be supported by the funding, which will be administered by the Irish Shows Association.
