Nicola Coughlan, who stars in the award-winning Derry Girls, has thrown her support behind the campaign to decriminalise abortion in the North of Ireland.
The star appeared alongside fellow Derry Girls actor Jamie-Lee O’Donnell in a photo supporting BPAS’ push to decriminalise abortion.
Nicola Coughlin said it was a very proud moment when we repealed the 8th in the Republic, but “it’s now time we supported our sisters” north of the border.
The actress tweeted this along with the hashtag #TheNorthIsNext.
Women from the jurisdiction can currently access abortion services in the Republic, but they must pay €450.
In response to a question from Sinn Féin health spokesperson Louise O’Reilly in the Dáil this week, Health Minister Simon Harris said that he hopes the North will liberalise its strict abortion laws.
“But as long as long as that remains not to be the case I want to make sure we can offer care,” he said.
