Seán Canney TD has welcomed the allocation of €89,000 in funding to support 20 built Heritage projects in County Galway.
A range of projects will be supported by the investment and the Galway East TD says that the fund will help to safeguard the county’s rich built heritage.
The funding will allow for many buildings to remain in use and help to bring others back into use.
“It will also have a knock-on economic benefit by providing further employment for heritage contractors and other skilled crafts and tradespeople,” said Deputy Canney.
“I acknowledge the work of the Local Authorities, particularly the Architectural Conservation Officers, Heritage Officers and planning and administrative staff without whom these schemes would not exist.”
The Independent TD said that he is encouraging the Department to review the cost of insurance for thatched properties which is ‘acting as a deterrent’ to house owners to retain the thatch roofs.
“The availability of homeowners with thatched houses to get insurance at a reasonable cost is a cause of concern which I raised with Minister Daragh O Brien in the Dáil.”
