The Fine Gael Parliamentary Party has recommended to its Executive Council that the party support a second term for Michael D. Higgins as Uachtarán na hÉireann in the Presidential Election campaign which could take place this year.
The decision was arrived at following the weekly meeting of the parliamentary party yesterday evening where the issue was discussed.
After the meeting, An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said: “The recommendation of the parliamentary party is that we will support President Higgins’ bid for re-election actively and campaign for him.
“President Higgins has done an excellent job, served the country very well and deserves a second term. He brings immense wisdom and experience to his role and I hope that this can continue with a second term for the President.”
