Prior warning notices have been issued for people thinking of going to three beaches in Galway City in the coming days.

Galway City Council have issued warning notices for Ballyloughane, Grattan, and Silvestrand beaches ahead of heavy rain this weekend.

It is expected that heavy rain, and the possibility of the storm overflow being used, could lead to increased bacteria at the three beaches.

The warning is expected to be in place for four days, from Friday to Monday, September 9-12.

The worst rain this weekend is expected on Sunday, September 11, when a status yellow weather warning will be in place throughout the day.

The results of further water sample testing are expected by the city council on the evening of next Wednesday, September 14.

While the warnings are in place, people should avoid splashing or swallowing any water from the three beaches, and to wash hands before preparing food after being in the water.
