Eight people were hospitalised in Galway after a road traffic accident which took place outside Leenane on Thursday evening.

Gardaí attended the scene of a serious two car traffic accident which took place on the Clifden road approximately 3km outside of Leenane at 5:15pm on Thursday.

Eight people in total were taken from the scene of the accident to University Hospital Galway.

Gardaí have said that their injuries were not life threatening, but that one man did receive serious injuries.

The road was closed overnight to allow gardaí to perform a forensic examination of this scene this morning.

Local diversions for road traffic remain in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses, in particular anyone who travelled on this stretch of road between 4:45pm and 6pm.
