Driver licences and learner permits due to expire before 30 June will remain valid for another four months.
The move is intended to ensure that motorists aren’t unfairly impacted for matters outside their control due to the temporary closure of Road Safety Authority facilities.
It will also keep vital supply chain workers on the roads.
The same extensions will apply to certificates of competency which are received on passing a driving test, driver theory certificates, Motorcycle Initial Basic Training Certificates and to National Car Tests and Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Tests.
Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon welcomed the confirmation and said that the government is taking actions that take into acccount the disruption brought to normal activities by the COVID-19 crisis.
Speaking on the extension, Minister Cannon said: “This move will ensure that motorists in Galway aren`t unfairly impacted for matters outside their control due to the temporary closure of Road Safety Authority facilities and will also keep vital supply chain workers on the roads.
“I also understand that work by the RSA to process applications for driving tests is continuing but that appointments will not be scheduled until the service resumes.”
