Man arrested for ramming Garda patrol car, injuring officers

A man in his 40s has been arrested today for ramming a Garda patrol car with his own car last night, injuring two officers.

On Wednesday, June 9 Gardaí observed a black Audi A5 car at Altan, on the Western Distributor Road, at approximately 8:30pm.

After approaching the car and turning on the blue light, the driver of the other vehicle drove directly towards them at speed.

The Garda car took evasive action, but the driver of the Audi still rammed the rammed the front passenger side of the patrol car.

The Audi car then fled at high speed out onto the Western Distributor Road. Gardaí followed in the direction of this vehicle and requested assistance.

Officers were then alerted to an abandoned vehicle in the Knocknacarra area.

Two Gardaí were injured, but did not require hospitalisation, as a result of this ramming incident.

This afternoon Gardaí arrested a man in his 40s at Galway Courthouse in connection with endangerment of the officers.

The man is currently detained at North Western Regional Headquarters in Murrough under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
