University Hospital Galway announced over the weekend that visiting restrictions were being tightened, and many procedures postponed, due to an outbreak of COVID at the hospital.

Portiuncula hospital has also seen a sharp increase in cases in recent days, with 15 as of Sunday, more than double the level on New Year’s Eve.

There are eight COVID patients in Galway being treated in intensive care units, six at UHG and two at Portiuncula Hospital. This represents an increase of just one on the day before.

Intensive Care capacity is under extreme strain in Galway, with no ICU beds available on Sunday according to HSE figures, and just one free at Portiuncula.
