A COVID-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer and its partner BioNTech has proved 90% effective in the latest tirals, the companies announced today.
The vaccine protected people from Covid seven days after the second of two doses, and 28 days after the first, according to the latest findings.
Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said that the first set of results from the Phase 3 Covid-19 vaccine trial provides the initial evidence of the vaccine’s ability to prevent Covid-19.
“We are a significant step closer to providing people around the world with a much-needed breakthrough to help bring an end to this global health crisis,” he said.
“We are reaching this critical milestone in our vaccine development programme at a time when the world needs it most.”
Sinn Féin’s David Cullinane said that the progress on developing a Covid-19 vaccine is welcome.
“Pfizer is one of a number of companies with which the European Commission has engaged with on procuring a Covid-19 vaccine,” said Deputy Cullinane.
“If life is to return to any sense of normality, it will only be with the help of widespread vaccination against the disease.”
