School holidays are to be extended under new plans to halt the rapid spread of Covid-19 across Ireland.

Schools will remain closed until 11 January as part of new restrictions agreed by the Cabinet today.

The Cabinet has also agreed to impose full Level 5 restrictions until the end of January.

This means all household visits will be banned, non-essential retail will close and there will be a 5km limit on travel.

Sports including golf and tennis will also be restricted, with the exception of professional or elite sports like Gaelic games and horse racing behind closed doors.
