COVID-19: Increase in patient numbers at UHG

The number of people hospitalised with COVID-19 at University Hospital Galway has continued to increase slowly but steadily in recent days.

There were nine confirmed case at UHG as of Friday evening, up from six at the start of the week.

At Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe five people were being treated for COVID-19, down from a mid-week peak of seven cases, but still above the start of the week.

There were a further four suspected cases at University Hospital Galway for which test results were awaited.

The number of patients in critical condition at UHG has remained steady at four, and one COVID patient is in the intensive care unit at Portiuncula.

Nationwide there were 164 people hospitalised with COVID-19 as of 8pm on Friday, of whom 48 were in the ICU.

A further ten new cases were reported in Galway yesterday, out of 434 cases nationally and one additional death.
