24 Covid patients in Galway hospitals despite surge in cases

There are 24 people with COVID-19 receiving care at Galway hospitals, the latest HSE data shows.

Twenty of those are in University Hospital Galway, while at Portiuncula Hospital there are four confirmed cases.

Six people with the virus at UHG are in ICU, while none of the four cases at Portiuncula are receiving critical care as yesterday evening.

Across the country, there were 135 people in ICUs yesterday evening, of which 93 are on ventilators.

Galway now has the second highest 14-day incidence rate in the country after Offaly.

Galway recorded 37 new cases of the disease yesterday, taking the 14-day incidence rate  to 327.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants with 845 cases confirmed in the past fortnight.

A further 574 cases of COVID-19 were reported by health officials across Ireland, as well as 56 more deaths related to the virus.
