Almost a quarter of million euro has been allocated for the conservation of historic buildings and landmarks around Galway.
Galway will receive €246,000 for 24 conservation projects in the city and county under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme and the Historic Structures Fund.
Five buildings of importance to Galway’s heritage have been allocated €90,000 under the HSF for work at Bohermore Cemetery, the thatch cottage at Murrough, Lough Cutra Castle in Gort and Duras House and St. Coman’s Church in Loughrea.
While €156,000 from the BHIS will go towards work on 19 projects like St. Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, the Presentation Convent, the Poor Clares’ Convent and Silkes on William Street West in the city as well as the Presbyterian Church and College House in Ballinasloe and other buildings in An Spideal, Maree, Oranmore, Athenry, among other locations.
Galway West TD Seán Kyne said that the places being protected under these schemes are “highly visible aspects of our heritage that have shaped and continue to shape our communities.”
“As well as protecting and conserving these buildings for future generations the funding will also leverage private investment and boost local, highly-specialised sectors,” he added.
