Galway city council is calling for the construction of publicly funded student accommodation.

At the monthly council meeting on Monday the council unanimously passed a motion calling on the departments of Education and Housing to work with Galway’s colleges to provide student accommodation.

The motion read:

That Galway City Council’s Housing SPC call on the Minister for Hosing Eoghan Murphy and Joe McHugh TD Department of Education to work with NUIG and GMIT to develop a programme to provide purpose built publicly funded student accommodation.

Sinn Féin Councillor Mairéad Farrell brought the motion to the Housing Strategic Policy Committee in September, after which it was sent forward to the full council for a vote.

The motion passed unanimously with 16 councillors voting yes and 2 absent from the chamber.
