Throughout Christmas and the New Year, the Maternity Unit at University Hospital Galway will gift a book to every new mum.

This caring initiative is to give mothers something to read to their newborn to encourage brain development and bonding.

Carmel Connolly, Clinical Nurse Manager 2 in Parent Education Services explains, “I am passionate about sewing the seed early in a child’s life to develop a love of reading.”

“Research shows that reading to babies early in their developmental stages has proven benefits, with links to cognitive development and stronger brain connections.”

“It gives a child a sense of security, develops vocabulary and above all, it enriches the relationship between parent and child.

“We are delighted to be able to gift each mum a book which was kindly donated by Children’s Books Ireland.”
