Flooding has been on people’s minds again in Galway recently as we have been going through a protracted period of heavy rain.
Galway TD Michael Fitzmaurice says proactive measures are required urgently to protect households, farms and businesses which are at risk of flooding after recent rainfalls.
The Independent says that action is needed from both the acting government and local authority, raising concerns at rising water levels in the Rivers Suck and Shannon.
“The local authorities need to put plans in place to help protect both households and local roads which are in particular danger of flooding,” Fitzmaurice said, citing Ballinasloe as a town in need of particular care.
“We need to be proactive in ensuring that we do not make the same mistakes as were made the last time”.
“Works need to continue urgently in a lot of areas in order to remove pinch points and relieve water,” Michael Fitzmaurice said.
“It is also important that the ESB releases as much as water as possible at Parteen Weir and Ardnacrusha to alleviate pressure upstream.”
