People and businesses in the west side of Galway city are without water today after a large watermain on the Letteragh Road burst.
The unplanned water outage is affecting Salthill, Dominick Street the West End, Newcastle, University Road, St Mary’s Road, Taylor’s Hill, Kingston and the south end of Knocknacarra.
Galway City Council has confirmed that supply to University Hospital Galway is independent and will remain unaffected.
The earliest return of supply is estimated to be 6pm this evening.
“Irish Water is working with Galway City Council to repair a significant burst which is causing water outages to a large number of customers today,” said Tim O’Connor, Irish Water.
“People living and working in these areas are asked to conserve water where possible and to only use what they need whilst continuing to adhere to public health advice on hand washing and hygiene regarding COVID-19 while these repairs are underway.
“Simple water conservation efforts can have a big impact, such as taking showers over baths and fixing dripping taps where it is possible to do so.
“There are lots more tips on how to conserve water in your home, business or school on the Water Conservation section of our website.”
