Rail service to Galway and Westport has been delayed today by a broken freight train on the tracks.

According to Irish Rail a freight train experienced a mechanical failure on the line at Geashill in Offaly causing severe delays to rail service on the western line.

Bus transfers were organised between Tullamore and Portarlington for passengers travelling to and from Galway this afternoon.

The broken freight train has just been cleared from the tracks and its hoped that regular services will resume shortly.
