This Christmas, as communities across Ireland come together, COPE Galway will continue a cherished tradition that makes a difference long after the festive season.
The annual COPE Galway Christmas Swim, held at Blackrock in Salthill, is set to see hundreds of participants take the plunge into Galway Bay, raising vital funds for people amongst us in the community who depend on the charity’s services.
Last year’s event drew over 800 swimmers who raised more than €45,000, directly supporting COPE Galway’s essential services for people experiencing homelessness, domestic abuse, and supporting healthy, independent ageing for older individuals.
This year’s swim promises to build on this incredible effort, blending a “live” swim on Christmas Day with a hybrid format that allows participants worldwide to take part with friends or family any time over Christmas Week.
With safety being paramount, the swim is a family-friendly tradition. Participants range from seasoned swim enthusiasts to newcomers keen to take part in the festive spirit.
Swimmers can join the live event at Blackrock from 9 am to 1 pm on the 25th or choose a safe time and place that suits them during Christmas week.
Speaking about the event, now in its 35th year, Lynia O’Brien from COPE Galway said, “On Christmas day, we all get together and brave the cold – so others don’t have to.”
“The funds raised make a tangible difference in enabling us to provide crucial support to individuals and families across Galway,” she added.
“Our services don’t stop over Christmas – children and adults of all ages and backgrounds in Galway rely on us all year round. We invite everyone to take part, celebrate the season, and show the power of community.”

The impact of organisations like COPE Galway is amplified by We Act, a public awareness campaign that highlights the value of Ireland’s charity and community sector.
The campaign is calling on the public to support, engage with, and appreciate non-profit organisations not just at Christmas but throughout the year, enabling them to continue their vital work.
Claire McGowran, We Act Campaign Manager, said, “From blood donations to gift giving and simply being a friendly face for those who are alone, the Irish charity sector is going above and beyond to create a magical Christmas for everyone.”
“We’re incredibly proud of these hidden heroes who are making Christmas 2024 brighter for communities across the country.”
The We Act campaign is led by a coalition of charities and community groups, including Boardmatch, the Disability Federation of Ireland, Dóchas, The Wheel, and Volunteer Ireland.
