Waterways Ireland has confirmed that the new boardwalk across the River Shannon will open to the public tomorrow.

Galway East TD Seán Canney welcomed the opening of the boardwalk linking Galway and Offaly, which represents a €2.5 million investment in recreational infrastructure in East Galway.

“The boardwalk is located close to Martello Tower and historic Victoria Lock which has also been opened up with a footpath along the riverbank from the boardwalk to the town,” said Deputy Canney.

“This project has been completed by Irish Water with the support of National Parks and Wildlife and Fáilte Ireland and the OPW.

“The boardwalk project has been a labour of love for the local committee led by Charlie Killeen. I was delighted to have been in a position to assist in the delivery of this very important project for Meelick”.

The boardwalk has been described as a ‘unique recreational and tourism attraction’ linking the two counties across the River Shannon.

“I am delighted that the facility is open to the public prior to Christmas and it will provide a positive reaction in these difficult times,” added the Independent TD.
