Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, has today announced the approval of the next phase in the development of Inis Oírr pier.
The works that will take place will address safety issues that have arisen over the years, in particular in relation to the risks posed from waves breaking over the pier.
Minister Humphreys confirmed today that Galway County Council will now commence the tender process to identify a contractor to undertake a series of works.
It is expected that this process will take approximately six months.
The project is listed as one of the Government’s infrastructure commitments in the Project Ireland 2040 plan.
Announcing this new phase of the project, Minister Humphreys said: “The development of the pier at Inis Oírr is an extremely important project and one that I know the community is anxious to see completed.
“I’m therefore pleased today to announce that I have given approval for the next phase of this project.
“Galway County Council will now identify a contractor to undertake these works, which will be aimed at addressing the safety concerns that exist.”
She said that she anticipates that she will be in a position to approve the awarding of this contract before the end of the year.
“This will enable the contractor to begin the construction of this important project in 2024.”
