Both of Fianna Fáil‘s Galway TDs will vote against the repeal of the Eighth Amendment in three weeks time, leading to some traditional Fianna Fáil voters claiming they now have no Fianna Fáil TD to vote for.
A photo in Dublin’s Merrion Square earlier this week showed Deputies Éamon Ó Cuív and Anne Rabbitte among a majority of Fianna Fáil TDs calling for a No vote on May 25.
Anne Rabbitte joins Fine Gael’s Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon in calling for a No vote, however, unlike Mnister Cannon in Fine Gael, Deputy Rabitte is joined by many of her colleagues in the Dáil.
Thirty one members of the parliamentary party disagree with their leader Micheál Martin on this issue, making the party the most pro-life in the Dáil by a considerable distance.
However, this has appeared to alienate some committed Fianna Fáil voters, with one FF voter tweeting: “As a committed Fianna Fáiler & a Yes voter this photo shows that I now have no FF TD that I can vote for in either West or East Galway at the next election.”
Galway East TD Anne Rabbitte is one of just five women TDs in Fianna Fáil – and one of as few as six women in the Dáil – backing a No vote in the referendum.
