The Galway Wool Co-operative which is marketing and selling wool in the county has been described as a giant step forward for sheep farmers by Galway East TD Seán Canney.

The Independent TD said that last Saturday the co-op was successful in selling over 5,000 kg of wool to Donegal Woollen Mills at a price of €2.50 per kg.

He explained that that wool prices are currently very low and the going rate generally for wool is twenty cent per kg.

But he said that this initiative demonstrates that wool is a product in demand and there is a necessity to market it effectively.

“Wool is a nature material and has many uses from clothing to insulation and there are many bi-projects that can be derived from wool,” said Deputy Canney.

The Galway TD said that the Government needs to support the woollen industry to help create jobs in the regions and also give farmers a fair price for this natural project.
