Homelessness in Galway spiked in the final three months of 2023, with nearly 300 adults in emergency accommodation over Christmas.
There were 299 homeless adults in Galway City and County recorded in the week of December 25 – 31, 2023, up from 261 in late October.
The figures are slightly better for family homelessness in the west of Ireland, with no great increase seen, but no real improvement either.
At the end of last year, there were 107 families in emergency accommodation across Galway, Mayo and Roscommon.
These families had a total of 225 children and 167 adults, and 54 of them were single parent families.
This is just one family fewer than the 108 recorded in the same region at the end of October, and an increase of five children from the 220 in emergency accommodation at that time.
Of the 405 adults living in emergency accommodation in the west of Ireland, just under half were between the ages of 25 and 45 years old, while 16 of them were aged 65 or older.
