Pandemic Unemployment Payments will be paid to 25,130 workers in Galway this week – an increase of 777 since last week.
The number of people on PUP in Co. Galway is creeping ever closer to the 32,300 workers who were in receipt of the payments during the first wave in May 2020.
Across Ireland, the Department of Social Protection has issued payments to 475,364 people this week, at a cost of €142.86 million.
A total of 6,749 people closed their PUP claims in past week to return to work, including 330 in Galway, but there was an overall increase of 15,443 people receiving PUP since last week.
“Even though there are an additional 15,443 people receiving the Pandemic Unemployment Payment this week, the scale of the increase has reduced significantly when compared to the previous fortnight,” said Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys today.
“The PUP continues to provide valuable support to those who have lost employment due to the implementation of necessary public health measures to curb the spread of this dangerous virus.”
Minister Humphreys said that protecting the health of everyone living in our State is paramount – and now more than ever, it is paramount that everyone makes every possible effort to follow the health guidelines.
