Galwegians will be offered the chance to taste some sweet ‘British Tears’ if an Irish horse wins on Gold Cup Day during the Cheltenham Festival next week.

The limited edition lager, created by Paddy Power in partnership with Third Barrel craft brewery, will be ready for punters on St. Patrick’s Day in the bookie’s Galway Fanzone in Monroe’s Tavern.

The specially commissioned home brew was created to mark the launch of the bookie’s Gold Cup Day fanzones arriving in Galway for the first time.

The event in Monroe’s is expected to host many horse racing fans who won’t make it to the Cotswolds this year after the festival’s organisers reduced the capacity to under 70,000 per day.

But Paddy Power has promised a Paddy’s Day drink for everyone present at the fanzone event should the Irish runners perform as expected next week.

Paddy Power currently makes it an odds-on shot (1/2) that the Irish will clean up by winning 19 or more races during the four-day marathon.

And if just one of them win on the Friday of the festival, Paddy will be pouring thousands of complimentary glasses of ‘British Tears’ for all the guests in attendance.

The Paddy Power Fanzone will feature live entertainment with honorary Irishman and comedian Damian Clarke taking the reins for the afternoon.

Rachael Kane, spokesperson from Paddy Power, said: “The Irish horse racing contingent’s performance at the Cheltenham Festival in recent years has been so dominant that it could hardly be scripted better for those looking for a free pint.

“To celebrate their inevitable success we’ve partnered with the lads at Third Barrel Brewing to create a limited-edition lager to treat punters in our Galway fanzone to a taste of ‘British Tears’. Hopefully it won’t prove as difficult to swallow as the taste of defeat.”

The Paddy Power Cheltenham Fanzone will be at The Camden in Dublin and Monroe’s Tavern in Galway on March 17, from 10am – 10pm. Tickets are available for €20 at www.paddypower.com/fanzone
