Galway News courts Man gets suspended sentence for alcohol theft

An Oranmore resident was up before Galway District court on Monday after pleading guilty to two counts of theft following a wine-chugging spree earlier this month.

Kelly Wall of Oakfield estate in Oranmore had previously admitted opening and drinking a bottle of white wine – valued at €13 – at Tesco Express on Newcastle Road on the morning of June 2.

The next day she did it again, this time at Monaghans Topaz Westside – opening and drinking a bottle of wine valued at €9.

The bottle had already been discarded by the time gardaí arrived on the scene.

Ms Wall has also been charged with the theft of six cans of Heineken valued at €12.90 from the same Tesco Express in late May – a case that will be heard in July.

The 48-year-old has 33 previous convictions.

District Court judge Mary Fahy said at the time that Ms Wall “needs to cop on”, adding that the court had “bent over backwards” to help her with alcohol addiction.

A three month imprisonment was suspended last year on the condition that she go to rehab.

The judge handed down an eight month sentence suspended on the condition that Ms Wall stay sober.
