A Kildare man who smashed a television in his hotel hotel room after an argument with his partner has been ordered to pay compensation before being sentenced.

Craig McMenamin (26), of Osberstown, Naas, entered a plea at Galway District Court to criminal damage to a television and light fitting at the Maldron Hotel in Galway City on August 24, 2019.

The court heard that Gardaí were called to the hotel in response to an incident the night before, where a couple had returned to the hotel while having an argument.

Later on the man left with an apparent hand injury, and the woman also left shortly after.

The television in their room had been smashed. In total, €836.07 worth of damage was done to the hotel’s property.

Defence counsel Gary McDonald said that his client had punched the television in anger after an argument.

He had been drinking at the time of this incident, but hasn’t taken a drink since counsel added.

There was €200 compensation in court on this day, but Judge Mary Fahy said that she would like to see a more substantial portion of the damages repaid.

The case was adjourned to November for another €500 in compensation to be paid over before sentencing.
