A man has been charged in connection with a stabbing in Ballinasloe which sent three people to the hospital on Sunday.

The 20 year old man was arrested after stabbing three other men in their 20s following a fight at Brackernagh, Ballinasloe on Sunday at around 7pm.

He was charged on Monday evening and brought before a special sitting of Loughrea District Court at 7:30pm.

He has been charged with three counts of assault causing harm, and two charges under the firearms and offensive weapons Act 1990.

All three injured men were taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe for treatment.

As of yesterday two of the men remained in hospital, where they were being treated for injuries which are understood to be serious, but not life threatening.

Gardaí said that all four of the young men involved in the altercation were known to one another.
