A Limerick man appeared before Galway District Court for shouting abuse at gardaí as they attended an injured person and shoving an officer arresting him.
Anthony Hannon (32), with an address at Sarsfield Avenue, Garryowen in county Limerick appeared before Galway District Court charged with being drunk in public and threatening or abusive behaviour.
He was also charged with assaulting a garda in the execution of their duty under Section 19 o the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1994.
Mr Hannon pleaded guilty to all of the charges.
The District Court heard that on October 26 of this year Gardaí were on Shop Street attending to an injured person bleeding on the ground.
While this was happening Hannon, who was very drunk at the time, began shouting abuse at the officers for no reason.
“You shower, you’re fucking useless,” he yelled, the court was told. When he kept on shouting Gardaí moved to arrest him for public order offences.
As they approached he tried to walk away, and shoved a Garda Linda Woodman as she was attempting to arrest him.
He then had to be restrained with the help of other officers to be arrested.
Solicitor John Martin said that Hannon was someone who had never been in trouble with the gardaí before this.
He was up from Limerick for a friend’s birthday that and was deeply ashamed of his actions. Mr Martin added that he apologised to Garda Woodman afterwards.
Judge Mary Fahy said that she would like to hear from Garda Woodman before sentencing. The case was put back for this, along with a Garda Behavioural Report and a contribution to the court poor box.
