Bail was denied at Galway District Court for a man accused of dangerous driving which caused the death of a young woman last August.

Richard McDonagh (43), with an address at Sliabh Rua, Ballybane has been accused of a range of road traffic offences related to events of August 23, 2020, including dangerous driving causing the death of 26 year old Margaret Ward at Caherlistrane.

Other alleged offences include three other charges of dangerous driving in the Tuam area that day, driving without a licence or insurance, and failure to produce the same at the demand of An Garda Síochána.

He is also charged with alleged burglary and theft of a vehicle from a residence on the Ballymoneen Road in Galway City on the same day.

Sergeant Cathal Rodgers told the court that the DPP has directed that the case should be tried on indictment.

Judge Mary Fahy refused to grant bail for McDonagh at Galway District Court on Monday after state objected due to the seriousness of the charges.

He was remanded in custody to next appear before the court on February 15 via video link.
