A 60 year old man has been sent forward to trial for alleged sexual assault in Galway.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Galway District Court this week.

The court heard evidence that a book of evidence had been served on the accused man.

He has been charged with a single count of sexually assaulting a female in January of 2018.

Judge Mary Fahy ordered the case returned to the next sitting of Galway Circuit Court commencing in October for trial.

She informed the accused man that if he wished to rely on an alibi, the state must be informed of it ahead of the trial.

Free legal aid was awarded to the accused man for a solicitor and one junior counsel.

The man was remanded on bail with continuing conditions, that he abide by a curfew and sign on at a Garda Station daily.

He must also reside at the address provided to the state, be contactable by mobile at all time, and have no contact with the injured party or any witnesses.
