In a documentary to be broadcast on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta next week, journalist Cóilín Ó Neachtain investigates the problem of cocaine use in Connemara and Co. Galway.
In the programme, Snaoisín Bán, on Wednesday 8 February at 2.05pm, Gardaí speak about their experience of the growing problem.
According to Garda figures, there was an increase of more than 50% in the number of people caught in possession of cocaine in Connemara in 2022 compared to the previous year.
Addiction counsellor Joe Treacy and GP Michael Casey speak about their experience of this issue and the serious health implications, and giving damning assessment of the services available for addicts in Co. Galway.
Listeners will also hear the personal experience of one young man, who describes how his cocaine habit escalated from one line to a €500 a day habit and cost him his job, his relationship, and his health, before he finally got help.
We’ll also learn about the services available in the Bushypark Addiction Treatment Centre in Ennis, Co. Clare.
