Galway Daily arts Over the Edge returns after summer break

The arts community in Galway is staying strong and connected, even in physical isolation, with the Over the Edge Open Mic night going online to give people their fix of poetry and prose next month.

A special June Over the Edge Open Mic reading will take place through Zoom on Thursday, June 11 at the usual time of 6:30pm to 8pm.

Over the Edge literary events, including the popular monthly open mic night for poetry and prose are organised by local artists and power couple Kevin Higgins and Susan Millar DuMars.

The featured readers for the June session will be Matthew Caley, Maeve Galvin, & Quincy Lehr, with the floor open to all comers afterwards.

Quincy R. Lehr says that he “is a butt-scratching imbecile with bad personal hygiene” but Kevin & Susan assure us that he exaggerates.

His most recent collection, The Dark Lord of the Tiki Bar is an often hilarious, but savagely critical take on the extremism often found in modern politics.

Going online has its advantages, as Quincy is joining this reading from his home in Los Angelas, where he teaches in High School.

Maeve Galvin has grown well beyond her roots of Bray, Co. Wicklow, travelling as an international development worker with the UN and non-profits to all corners of the globe.

Her work Cambodia forms the basis of her first novel The Saviours, which traces the lives of foreign aid workers.

Since the debut of his first collection Thirst in 1999, Matthew Caley has published five more to great acclaim.

His latest and 6th collection is Trawlerman’s Turquoise, published by Bloodaxe in 2019.

As usual there will be an open-mic after the Featured Readers have finished. New readers are always particularly welcome. The MC for the evening will be Susan Millar DuMars.
