galway city mural competition

With many of us stuck at home at this time, a new art competition has been launched giving people the chance to have their artwork replace one of the city’s most recognisable murals.

The mural currently resides at the corner of Woodquay and Eyre Street on Hughes Opticians, and the competition was launched by the opticians to coincide with Galway 2020.

The theme of the competition is ‘Where there is vision, there is hope’, and is open to anyone – children, students and local artists are encouraged to enter to have the opportunity to display their artwork to thousands of passers-by in the city centre.

Entrants can email the practice with their artwork and the winner will have their work of art recreated on the wall, replacing the current mural.

All other submissions will be displayed in practice for visitors to see once the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.

Clodagh McGovern, Director and Optometrist at Hughes Opticians said: “As Galway is European Capital of Culture 2020, and as perfect vision is (20/20) we thought this is the perfect time to revamp our mural and create a new and improved attraction for the area.

“This is a really fantastic opportunity for creative people of any age and ability to put their mark on the city and have their work viewed and photographed by the hundreds of thousands of visitors who come to Galway every year.

“With the challenging and uncertain times around at the moment, it really is the responsibility of all of us to pull together and make Galway an even more vibrant place to visit, showing the world what it really means to be a part of this city.

“We really look forward to seeing your creativity and seeing what people can do to with our theme ‘Where there is vision there is hope’ #visionandhope.”

Sinéad Clarke, Manager at Hughes Opticians added: “The theme is all about seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, which we think is very apt for these times. We really can’t wait to see what people come up with.

“Is maith and rud é teacht le chéile ag an am seo (it’s good to come together at this time).”

Entries can be emailed to manager@hughesopticians.ie, with your name and contact details.

Please make allowance for the fact that your artwork will have to be scaled up in size. For more information, call the practice 091-590010.
