People are craving stimulation in lockdown, and Galway County Libraries are making some amazing historical content available to read online with the digitisation of The Galway Reader journal.
The Galway Reader was a journal published by Galway County Libraries from 1948 to 1954.
The six year run saw four volumes of the journal published, with each volume containing four issues.
Samuel J. Maguire, the first County Libraries for Galway who held the role from 1926 – 1955, edited the journal, and wrote most of its articles.
Taking advantage of the wide range of resources available in the local studies collection in Galway’s library service, Maguire penned an incredible range of articles covering Galway’s history.
The short but highly readable articles covered a wide range of topic related to County Galway; famous events and people, periods of hardship such as the Famine and War of Independence, and even local sport, flora, and wildlife.
This public service was made possible thanks to a donation from the Hawkins family, made in memory of Seán Hawkins, which facilitated the digitisation of this important part of Galway’s history.
