Calasanctius College will Rock You with dystopian musical featuring the best of Queen

The students of Calasanctius College in Oranmore promise to rock like Galway has never seen in a musical coming to the stage this month.

For more than a month now students and staff alike have been hard at work for the ‘We Will Rock You’ dystopian musical extravaganza.

“We are looking forward to this year’s musical. It is great to see so many showing an interest. It is the largest cast we have ever had,’ commented Principal of Calasanctius College, Córa Ní Loinsigh,

“It is uplifting to see so much joy and happiness in the students faces as they practice and prepare for this wonderful show.”

The students have gone all out crafting a saga set in a future world formerly known as Earth run by the mighty Globaslsoft corporation.

In their relentless pursuit of corporate conformity they have made a society where everyone wears the same clothes, thinks the same thoughts and goes about in a brain-dead haze.

Against this will rise an unlikely grouping of Bohemian rebels who just can’t live in a world where rock music is unheard of and all instruments are banned.

With the help of Pop, an ancient hippie librarian, two Bohemians, Galileo and Scaramouche, are on a mission to find Rock’s Holy Grail, Brian May’s guitar buried in the remains of Wembley Stadium.

The cast is made up of a talented collection of students from all ages groups in the school, backed up by the support of the staff and a backstage cohort of students who have been busy with the design and creation of the set.

Some familiar faces from previous award-winning school productions feature along with a host of new faces making their stage debut.

Rory Collins plays ‘the dreamer’ Galileo, Oliwia Koman plays Scaramouche, Juliette Macken plays the evil Killer Queen alongside Tristan Kirby as the terrifying head of police, Commander Khashoggi, Temiloluwa Oshandiya as librarian and hippy, Timileyin Ogundare as Bohemian Britney Spears, and Witkoria Buczek as his feisty companion Meat.

Returning to the cast this year are Galway University Musical Society award nominee Lucas Lamounier as one of the Super Yuppies, and chameleon and GUMs award winner 2019 Caoilfhionn McGrath who will take on the challenge of multiple roles as one of the more experienced members of the cast.

The deputy principal Geraldine Harkin and teacher/co-producer Louise Kiernan were the ones who suggested crafting a musical around the tunes of Queen, because really you just need an excuse to rock out to Freddy.

They also felt that the storyline was “really relevant to our modern era where we are all so dependent on the internet” and they are very excited to see this come to life on the stage in Calasanctius.

The show will feature more than 20 hit Queen songs including “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Killer Queen,” “We Will Rock You,” “Somebody To Love,” “We Are the Champions,” “Don’t Stop Me Now,” and many more.

This is the most ambitious performance stage by Calasanctius College yet with an extensive lighting show and professional projections planned to wow the audience.

‘We Will Rock You’ will run from October 16 – 18. Tickets cost €8 for kids and €15 for adults and can be bought on the school website or at its reception.
